Following recent negotiations, Sembcorp Bournemouth Water has agreed a lease with the RAF Ibsley Airfield Heritage Trust to take over responsibility of the control tower and to restore it for use as a heritage centre. The Trust was formed in 2010 to work alongside the RAF Ibsley Historical Group, which has researched the airfield (built in 1941) and collected material since 1992. The Trust’s project plans include interactive displays, education outreach initiatives for local schools, oral and filmed stories from surviving RAF Ibsley and local residents, and a flight simulator experience over a ‘virtual’ RAF Ibsley.
This control tower, whilst similar in design to many others built before and during WW2, is believed to be the only surviving unaltered example in the country whose floors and balcony were formed entirely from concrete. Others have disappeared due to part timber construction. The Trust will work closely with the New Forest Park Authority which itself is commencing a WW2 heritage project to cover the whole of the New Forest.
The Trust is holding a ‘RAF Ibsley Revival’ open day in the grounds of Moyles Court School (Station Headquarters in WW2) on Sunday 3rd June 2012 just North of Ringwood. This will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the release of 'The First of the Few', a wartime film made at RAF Ibsley relating the story of the Spitfire and the 20th Anniversary of RAF Ibsley Historical Group.
