GEORGE AND SISTER MARY IN WARTIME
|
Mary (now 87) was in a
searchlight unit in London during much of the war.
Serving in 26(AC) Squadron (Lysanders) at RAF Catterick, France (October 1939 to April 1940, and West Malling, 835 Barker on left, retired as F/O engineer officer and 928 Cooke on right, killed in service as F/Lt gunnery leader in pathfinders. Jenkinson (see his page) and Cooke travelled together from Lancashire to Halton to Join up in 1934. Both became aircrew. The other man standing was the 26 Squadron carpenter, who made a magnificent 5- seater bog in the grounds of the Château de la Triquerie for us when we were at Abbeville Aerodrome and billeted in Nissen huts in the Château grounds. Who is the LAC fitter sitting? I forget. 26 spent some time at Dieppe in 1940 and the pilot of a Lysander from another AC squadron there ran up the engine on the brakes, took off, did a circuit and landed reporting he was tail-heavy. This was not surprising, an Erk was still on the tailplane hanging on to the tail fin like grim death. After this, Lysander engines could be run up without human weighting - the large tailplane and elevators made that superfluous anyway! |
